Rittenhouse; Pennsylvania Style Rye Whiskey

Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey is a whiskey that lends itself to the heritage of Rittenhouse Square in Pennsylvania. Rittenhouse is distilled and bottled by Heaven Hill Distillery in Louisville and Bardstown, Kentucky; although it is distilled and bottled in Kentucky it is done so in a Pennsylvania style. Pennsylvania style whiskey is often referred to as "Monongahela," after the city in Pennsylvania where it was developed in the 1700's. Fun fact; Whiskey Point is a bluff located within the city and was a frequent meeting spot for those involved in the infamous Whiskey Rebellion which was put down by George Washington. These whiskeys typically have a two grain mashbill. Historically this type of whiskey would have had a rye content close to 80-90% with the remainder being malted barley. The recipes rarely used corn in the mash. The high rye content gives this style of whisky some of its key spice when tasting. A high percentage rye whiskeys tend to have a forward spice and dried fruit taste on the tongue with a finish of woody flavors. Heaven Hill's version of this whiskey doesn't disappoint. Rittenhouse straight rye whiskey is aged for four years in charred oak barrels. The aging process, like other aged spirits, gives the whiskey more of its distinct flavors as well.
If you are looking for a delicious, and inexpensive rye then this is the one for you. The flavor and drinkability of this rye whiskey is well above its pricing. For under $25.00 a bottle (in Utah) you simply cannot go wrong adding this one to your collection. As good as it is paired in your favorite cocktails, I have often found myself enjoying an ounce or two with just some ice for good company.

Tasting points:
Color - mahogany
Nose - dried fruits and toffee
Taste - spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus, and vanilla, clean and rich
Finish - spices with a lingering woody flavor
